Incentivising people in the workplace is an incredibly important aspect which is often not given the focus it really should. The importance of keeping people happy is obviously beneficial to productivity and it keeps the dynamics of a team in a good place. Too much focus is often placed on targets and whilst many jobs come with financial bonuses with rewards for hitting them, there are other smaller gestures which can go a long way to promoting the mood of your colleagues in the workplace. The value of the reward should not the be-all and end-all and by doing a few small things you can reap some quite significant rewards.
Rather than e-mailing a member of staff to say well done or whatever it is you want to say, buy them a card or write them a letter. The separation from work that an item like this creates will make the gesture seem much warmer and more heartfelt. If they have something which they can take home or show to their families they are more likely to appreciate the thanks and it will go much further.
We spend so long with work colleagues over the course of a week and yet quite often there’s people you will rarely speak to or simply don’t have the chance to interact with. If you work in a certain department and therefore have little co-operative work with another department you could go your whole career without saying more than hello to them. Socials are a great way for people to get to know other people who they don’t get to speak with. Also, by socialising outside of work it can encourage non-work conversations. We are all human beings with interests and passions so you can use occasions like this to boost relations between people.
If somebody has done something which warrants a reward spend the time to find out from colleagues what they would really appreciate receiving. Give them a gift that is something related to their hobbies or something amusing connected to a humorous incident. The human factor attached to this will make the person receiving it far happier than getting a generic reward which they might not truly care about.
Awards & Trophies
Some people think that these can be a bit cliché but so long as they are not used in an artificial way, corporate trophies can bring a colleague’s mood right up. Let’s consider someone is having a tough time out of work and the pressures involved in business are clearly not going to make their life any better. If and when people do particular things in the workplace the small gesture of receiving a trophy can do a lot more than you’d think. Try using them for slightly intangible measures such as “gracefully handled” or “above and beyond” when certain circumstances have been tackled. Have them personalised through an engraving company such as Millenium Engraving so you can think up your own ideas and you could make a big difference to a colleague’s day at work.
